Body height (Vertical Growth) of a person mainly depends on genetic factors, which is basically derived from the genes of one's parents. The taller one's parents are, greater are the chances for the child to grow even taller. This is true for almost 90% of the cases, however some cases do differ. In some cases, the child of taller parents may be comparatively shorter and on the other hand, a child of shorter parents may be comparitively taller. This is due to the fact that humans derive genes not only from their parents, but also from their grandparents. So, it can be said that height basically depends on genetic factors.

It is also seen that Boys are influenced by their mother's height, whereas girls are influenced by their father's height. To put it simple, girls born to tall men tend to be tall whereas boys born to tall mothers tend to be tall

However, height is also influenced by external factors like Exercise, Diet etc. It's obvious that people engaged in sports like basketball or volleyball tend to gain a few more inches than their biologically pre-destined height. Diet also plays an important role in a person's growth level. Children who are fed with a protein-rich diet at young age tend to grow faster than their counterparts.

The scientific and most commonly accepted method of predicting one's maximum height is given below. This is based upon taking in account the height of one's parents as well as grandparents. This calculation turns out to be correct in almost 90% of the cases

Below is the formula for calculating one's maximum height based height of one's parents as well as grandparents


Your father's height = F cm (inches)
Your mother's height = M cm (inches)
Your father's father's height = FF cm (inches)
Your father's mother's height = FM cm (inches)
Your mother's father's height = MF cm (inches)
Your mother's mother's height = MM cm (inches)

If you are a male:
With 95% certainty,
Your Maximum Potential Height in cm (inches) = (F + M + FF + FM + MF + MM) / 6 * 1.08 + 8.8 cm (3.5 inches)

With 99% certainty,
Your Maximum Potential Height in cm (inches) = (F + M + FF + FM + MF + MM) / 6 * 1.08 + 14 cm (5.5 inches)

If you are a female:
With 95% certainty,
Your Maximum Potential Height in cm (inches) = (F + M + FF + FM + MF + MM) / 6 * 0.92 + 6.4 cm (2.5inches)

With 99% certainty,
Your Maximum Potential Height in cm (inches) = (F + M + FF + FM + MF + MM) / 6 * 0.92 + 11.4 cm (4.5inches)
